I continued the tradition of picking up some chibi models for the kids at Adepticon this year. This time it didn’t take a full year to get them painted.
Robot Pony by Max
Max’s (age four) favorite color is blue. Can you tell? This year I encouraged him to try drybrushing to pick out the highlights, and dot the eyes with white for a bit of life. He also wanted to edge the bases with an orange paint that he had previously gotten for me as a gift.
Seahorse Pony by Ruth
Ruth (age seven) is starting to think a bit more realistically than just blocks of color. I helped her with some washes. She wanted pink metal as base edging, so I mixed some up for her.
I also got myself a chibi knight pony, but haven’t gotten around to painting it yet.
I became aware of Gary Hunt Miniatures through a video on Tested. I’ve been slowly building up a collection of post-apocalyptic/dystopian miniatures, and figured this would fit right in.
The model came glued to the base with an ink wash. That makes it look nice right out of the box, but made me a bit nervous about painting it. I primed with my regular Vallejo Surface Primer through an airbrush and it seems to have worked out.
Chainsaw Monk from Gary Hunt Miniatures
I decided to paint him brightly, with the red chainsaw to contrast green robes. I’m not totally sure I’m happy with the colors, but it seems to suit the larger-than-life aesthetic.
I demoed This is Not a Test at Adepticon in 2017 and picked up the book and a few models. I haven’t had a chance to play it since, but that didn’t stop me from buying one more model. Why the caravan cow? Well, it amuses me. Plus, at least on some level, it could be a pack animal in other games, too.
Caravan Cow
I used the Secret Weapon rust colors for the body, with orange tints on the skin and brown in the chitin. Now only do I like these colors for organics, it seems like rusty flesh would go along with the rest of the decrepit terrain.
Much like the Overladen Henchman, the baggage provides a fun opportunity to pick out a lot of details. Plus, who doesn’t want a scorpion tail to defend their loot?
