I scored these models in the Adepticon swag bag. It has taken far too long to get them painted up.
Will o’ the Wisp (the scream)All three had a pretty nasty seam running down the middle of their bodies. I rushed gap filling and didn’t do a particular good job. Worse, I lost the lower jaw of The Scream to the carpet gods, but forgot about that when I was doing green stuff gap filling. Ugh!
I decided to do the nodules as glowy bits like in the box art. I wish I had also done something a little more eye-catching for the wings. They’re sculpted as insectoid, but the paint doesn’t sell it,
I don’t even know how this one is supposed to be mounted to the base. Gluing the fingertips doesn’t seem like it would last. So I sunk a bit of clear acrylic rod through the body. No problem.
I’ve been holding off on playing Zoraida even though I’m excited about the new Wave 5 upgrades for her. It seemed certain that I would be frustrated with the lack of Will o’ the Wisps to supercharge the Voodoo Doll. Now I’m ready.
All of a sudden everybody wants the guy from the Bandersnatch kit to make Prospectors. But you can’t have him. He’s busy as the hapless fool about to be Bandersnatched.
I’m usually pretty timid with lighting effects. I first painted the man regularly, but it was clear it wasn’t going to work. Why did he have a lantern? How could he not see the giant spider creeping over him?
I decided to try something a little different — object source darkness. The Bandersnatch was sucking the light away. I put some Secret Weapon Tire Black (a nice black with a hint of blue) in the airbrush and went at it. A drybrush of Rubber/Rubber Highlight brought back the shape a bit. Airbrushing over a painted model like this makes me really nervous, since it’s hard to fix any mistakes. But I’m quite pleased with the result.
The shadows don’t quite make sense if the light is coming from the lantern, but if the darkness is coming from the Bandersnatch it works.
Now in its thirdyear, let’s take a look at my hobby work over the past year.
Overview
I started the hobby year working through the Malifaux Black Friday order and getting a few things ready for Adepticon. Then the queue got real. In 2015 I felt I had been a little too stingy at Adepticon. Let’s just say I didn’t have that problem this year.
I think the vintage models from Wyrd’s Guilder store may break me from the compulsive need to acquire every limited/special edition/alt model. You can collect Guilders by participating in sanctioned events, usually one for playing, and more for winning. With a total of 35 needed to get all seven currently available models, there’s no way I’ll get them all.
In the summer, I did manage to win a Henchman Hardcore tournament at Games of Berkeley. A Vintage model would be mine!
Pandora is in my faction, plus maybe the coolest of the set. So she was my clear choice.
I tried reverse shading the apparitions, though the faces looked wrong without darkened eyes and mouths. Otherwise, I kept it much the same as my original Pandora.
