Ultramarines: Rhinos

From time to time I’ll reach into the hobby vault to feature models painted before I started this blog.

The Rhino is the backbone of many Space Marine armies. I had two from my initial 2nd/3rd edition foray into the game, but they either weren’t painted, or at least not remotely well.

Some airbrushing and a bit of black an silver would at least make them presentable. And that’s as far as I got with them while still playing the game.

Ultramarines: Dreadnought (Assault on Black Reach)

From time to time I’ll reach into the hobby vault to feature models painted before I started this blog.

This Dreadnought is from the Assault on Black Reach set, the fifth edition starter box for Warhammer 40,000. It was among the first 40k models bought after my return to the hobby, though it one of the first to be painted.

It did represent one of my earlier forays into magnetizing, with both arms magnetized so I could put on Forgeworld autocannon arms or the multimelta/heavy flamer that came in the kit. The starter box had simpler models, so didn’t feature the fuller weapons set of the standalone dreadnought.

The basing is super simple, just a single green flock. I suspect I was in a rush for an event, or maybe just a game day, and never got back to it.

Ultramarines: Predator

I painted these two Predators some time apart from each other.

The first was done quick in a week ahead of an event (a narrative event at (I think) DunDraCon that involved taking 500 points of “allies” (back in 5th edition before the allies was part of the game) which. In the last game of the event everyone’s allies betrayed them after deployment. Your opponent got to control them. I had Orks as the allies, but wanted to beef up my main force.

I think the second was just simple force expansion.

As usual for my marines, the weapons and sponsons are all magnetized, so they can be used in a variety of configuration.

Ultramarines: Tactical Squad

From time to time I’ll reach into the hobby vault to feature models painted before I started this blog.

Let’s take a trip back in time. My wife had been doing a lot of shopping at the craft store, and I had been eyeing a F-15 plastic model kit like one that I lusted after as a kid. I never really got into model airplanes as a kid. It turns out that $30 is unimaginably expensive to a nine-year-old but quite affordable to an employed adult. So I bought it and put it together.

With that done, I thought I’d try some 40k again. I had a bunch of stuff in the closet from when I briefly played in the 2nd and 3rd edition era. While I made some attempts at painting back then, most was unpainted, including this squad. I read some articles, watches some videos, and bought some paints.

Then, with a handful of painted models, I had an excuse to try playing again. I found a pickup game at the local shop with a kind soul who was willing to put up with my ignorance. Things kind of snowballed from there.
