Next Gen Part Three, Pony Edition

I continued the tradition of picking up some chibi models for the kids at Adepticon this year. This time it didn’t take a full year to get them painted.

Max’s (age four) favorite color is blue. Can you tell? This year I encouraged him to try drybrushing to pick out the highlights, and dot the eyes with white for a bit of life. He also wanted to edge the bases with an orange paint that he had previously gotten for me as a gift.

Ruth (age seven) is starting to think a bit more realistically than just blocks of color. I helped her with some washes. She wanted pink metal as base edging, so I mixed some up for her.

I also got myself a chibi knight pony, but haven’t gotten around to painting it yet.

Next Gen Part Two: Superpig and Coyote

My kids are always interested in whatever I’m painting. Ruth, now seven, has painted a few before. Max, age three, has not. Last year at Adepticon I saw these chibi models and thought they’d have fun with it. It took a long time to get around to it, but we finally have some results.

Coyote, by RuthRuth is a big fan of pink. Not only did Coyote get some pink fur but she also wanted to do pink snow. And purple snow. Sure, why not?

Max chose some vibrant colors. He was really into the snow on unusual places, like the eyes. It’s kind of creepy. I like it. When big sister was doing purple snow, he also wanted in.

I didn’t give much guidance on these models. I just put paint in the palette as requested. For basing, I encouraged drybrushing on sand, but they went wild with snow. I’m curious how Ruth would do with more instruction, but it’s fun to see what she comes up with. I picked up a few more models this year. Maybe we’ll experiment.

Painted Guys: The Next Generation

Ruth, my four-year-old daughter, has been very interested in my hobby stuff. She asks to see what I’m working on. She especially liked the egg that came the Wyrd Easter order. So I asked her if she’d like to paint it. Of course, she said yes.

She helped me wash the model, and I cleaned up the seam lines and glued it to the base. She primed it with the airbrush (with some help), and eventually we found a time to actually paint it.

I worked on a different model, but Ruth was much faster. She soon asked for another. Luckily I had some random Reaper stuff primed, so gave her a second. This one she said was sitting on the sun. My wife suggested glitter for the basing material.

They might not win any awards, but we had fun.
