2025 Hobby Year in Review

Somehow another year has snuck by. Let’s see what’s happened.

Overview

Hobby remains reduced overall, even though there’s a slight increase since last year.

My primary game switched from Shatterpoint to Marvel Crisis Protocol at the beginning of the year. It’s been a lot of fun revisiting MCP and exploring it with Ruth. It’s also given me too many excuses to let the backlog even more out of control.

I got a FDM 3D printer this year, for various projects (hobby and otherwise). I haven’t printed out a ton of terrain, since paint time is the real limiting factor. But I have created a couple of accessories.

Solo board gaming remains a major competitor for hobby time. Since I ran out of Arkham Horror LCG campaigns, I expanded into Marvel Champions. In theory this cross pollinates with MCP. I just finished Sinister Motives and am moving on to the mutant waves. There’s also Final Girl and digital board games, and Metroid distracting me.

Putting that together, I’ve lost hobby momentum at the end of the year. Hopefully I can get it back in the new year.

Total: 144 models, a 3.6% increase over last year.

  • 66 Crisis Protocol, plus 4 terrain pieces
  • 42 Cyberpunk Combat Zone
  • 15 Age of Sigmar
  • 14 ArcWorlde
  • 3 other

Crisis Protocol

Crisis Protocol has been my main minis game for most of 2025. I dusted off the models from when I played a couple years ago, and greatly expanded my collection. Most weeks, my daughter and I are at the shop on MCP night to play.

Cyberpunk Combat Zone

Ruth and I did a six week campaign in Combat Zone in the middle of the year. I played the Maelstrom from the starter, and Ruth picked Gen Red. It’s a fun game, though I find the rules to be a little under-developed.

I printed some cyberpunk city terrain, though to my shame I didn’t find time to paint it before the campaign.

Age of Sigmar

I went to visit a buddy out of town, and he suggested we play Spearhead. Even though I don’t play GW games on the regular these days, I continue to pick up the boxes and admire the models. So I jumped at the chance, ignoring the models I already had and got some ghouls.

  • Abhorrant Archregent
  • Varghulf Courtier
  • Morbheg Knights
  • Cryptguard

ArcWorlde

ArcWorlde was this year’s impulse Adepticon buy. I haven’t played with them since, but they’re still cool, characterful models.

  • Ancient Dead
  • Vampires
  • Promo goblin

Other

Usually there’s a grab bag of others, but this year was pretty quiet. Just a few mouse goblins I previously picked up at Adepticon because I thought they looked cool.

  • Kawna Mouse Goblins

Looking to 2026

I expect Crisis Protocol to remain the main game for 2026. There’s a big pile of models waiting for me. I’m going to do what I can to keep it going with Ruth.

I also feel an itch for more solo miniature games. Too many of them — Rangers of Shadow Deep, Five Parsecs From Home, Don’t Look Back, and County Road Z are all calling my name.

Supporting all that, I’m hoping to take more time on printing (and then painting) terrain.
